Mayo Male Voice Choir May Notes.

From: Martin Carney, PRO, MMVC

Springtime in Ballintubber Abbey. Venue, setting and atmosphere chimed on an evening when the historic 800 year old church played host to the Mayo Male Voice choir’s springtime concert. The ancient abbey reverberated to an eclectic, enjoyable and riveting selection of music and song. The evening was enhanced with the presence of tenor extraordinaire Ross Scanlon and the delightful strains of soprano Emma Nash.

Both added a touch of class to the programme and captivated the attendance with superb renditions from, among others, Les Miserables, My Fair Lady and Tosca. Under the baton of Musical Director Deirdre Lee and with accompanist Rebecca Cresham the evening was one of the most successful ever staged by the choir. A special word of thanks is due to Fr. Frankie Fahey of Ballintubber in granting the use of the Abbey for the concert at short notice. The wonderful acoustics enhanced the occasion and patrons favourably remarked afterwards on the sound quality. It would be remiss not to mention the kindness and hospitality of all the volunteers who went out of the way to extend a welcome and provide refreshments afterwards. The choir members also wish to thank all the media outlets for publicising the event.

Some upcoming dates on the calendar are worth remembering.

On Thursday May 25th the choir will perform in the ‘Ballina Sings’ at the Ballina Arts Centre at 8pm. The occasion is part of the Mayo International Choral Festival which is always worthy of support. Click here for details of the events of the festival.

Two days later on May 27th the choir will strut its stuff in the Male Voice Section of the Choral Festival at 12 noon. On this occasion the choir is on home ground in the GMIT and once more all support would be welcome.

Already plans are afoot for a trip to Wales next February so dull interludes are few and far between with the choir.

The MMVC Annual Spring Concert 2017

Mayo Male Voice Choir held their annual Spring Concert at Ballintubber Abbey, Co Mayo on the evening of the 27th April.

The concert was ably compèred by Frank Forde and we played to a full house. We were supported by two superb artists, Ross Scanlon – a strong tenor, and Emma Nash – an amazing soprano of whom Frank Forde, our compère, said “We have heard an angel in the Abbey tonight”.

Mayo Male Voice Choir Spring Concert

On Thursday April 27th the Mayo Male Voice Choir will perform its Springtime concert in Ballintubber Abbey at 8.00 pm sharp. Comprising men from parishes throughout the county the choir has for a number of years provided audiences with a rich and varied selection of melodies that reflect different musical traditions and genres.

The occasion will be a celebration of all that is good in four-part choral music. Popular songs like The Fields of Athenry and The Star of the County Down offer sharp contrast to music from the world of Light Entertainment and Light Opera. Well known ballads like The Parting Glass and Working Man are given a richer context by the four part choir. These are small samples of the wider repertoire that Mayo Male Voice choir will perform on the night.

Our guest artists this year are Emma Nash (Soprano) and Ross Scanlon (Tenor) and they will be performing items from My Fair Lady, Les Miserables, Romeo and Juliette and Tosca.

Since commencing practice last September members have met weekly under the watchful eye of their Musical Director Deirdre Lee. With Deirdre it’s a case of keeping it in the family and perpetuating a tradition as she continues to emulate the sterling work that her father George provided for many years. She has been a source of great encouragement to everyone involved.

This concert in a magnificent setting is well worth supporting. Your presence and support would be warmly welcomed at an event that is certain to provide top class entertainment and will surely satisfy lovers of good music.

Danny McGuiness – 30th January 2017 RIP – Obituary

It is with great sadness that we recall the passing of one of our founder members and President Danny McGuinness at Belvilla Community Unit Mount Carmel Dublin on 30th January 2017.

Danny, born in Liverpool in 1924, was a well known personality around the town having been in business in Cornanool Castlebar prior to his becoming a telephonist at Castlebar Telephone Exchange Pavilion Road. Having spent some time as a professional footballer in England he brought those skills to his adopted Castlebar where he coached teams in both Castlebar Town and Castlebar Celtic.

Having moved to Dublin following the death of his wife Margaret over two years ago he became a resident in Belvilla where his love of singing came to the fore once more. He was instrumental in setting up a choir in the Unit which now meets every Sunday for Mass.

Everton has lost a supporter and our tenor line has lost a valuable member. We were honoured to sing at his funeral mass where one of his fellow first tenors Joseph Garvey gave a rendition of Danny’s favourite song ‘My Way’.

To his daughters Patricia and Caroline, his son Frank and extended family we extend our deepest sympathy

Danny McGuinness – Funeral Mass

The funeral Mass for our President, Danny McGuinness took place yesterday, Thursday the 2nd Feb, 2017, at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar at 11 am. The Mass was well attended by his family and former work colleagues and of course the Mayo Male Voice Choir was in attendance. In addition to the usual hymns we sang A Mhuire Mháthair and Homeward Bound (words and music by Marta Keen, arranged by Jay Althouse). At the end of the service as Danny’s remains were removed from the Church a beautiful rendering of ‘I did it my way’ was performed by tenor choir member Joseph Garvey who accompanied himself on the piano.

An obituary will follow.
